“Once I decided to put myself first and apply to HACC, doors have been opening and I would not change my decision for the world.”
Many HACC students work full-time jobs and raise children while taking classes. Starkisha Williams, an early care and education student, works in a classroom with children over 40 hours a week, while being a single mother to seven. She chose HACC because it provided her the flexibility to earn her degree, as well as be a supportive mother for her children while showing them to “never put your dreams aside.”
The journey hasn’t always been easy for Starkisha, as she had to decide not take a class in order to meet the demands of being a parent. She said, “I’ve always had to put myself last. That has been the biggest challenge. Once I decided to put myself first and apply to HACC, doors have been opening and I would not change my decision for the world.”
When asked how HACC has made her life better, Starkisha said, “To start, I am a college student. Let me say that again, I am a college student. 39 year old, single mother of 7 is about to be a HACC graduate.” She added that this has boosted her confidence in so many ways.
After she graduates, Starkisha plans to continue her work in early childhood care, as she loves working in the classrooms preparing children for kindergarten.
