Phlebotomy Technician Certificate - Non-Credit (0004)

Do you want to be an important member of a health care team? Become a certified phlebotomy technician and be taught how to skillfully perform successful venipunctures and specimen collection as you work in an outpatient or inpatient health care setting. HACC’s workforce development unit is now offering a full and part-time Phlebotomy Technician course that will allow you to work in a high-demand health care career.

Also, you will be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association’s Phlebotomy Technician Certification Examination (included in the tuition cost and taken at the end of the course).

Our certificate course teaches you how to properly obtain blood specimens used for laboratory testing. You will be taught:

  • Safety procedures
  • Specimen collection and collection equipment
  • infection control
  • medical terminology
  • point-of-care testing
  • customer service
  • role the phlebotomist plays within the health care system

You will be required to perform venipuncture in class. 

Our certificate program is 100 total classroom and laboratory hours, plus 80 hours completed in a clinical setting. In a clinical setting, you are under the direct supervision of a clinical preceptor and can work as a Phlebotomist – applying the skills you learned in class within this clinical environment.

Full-time day classes are seven weeks in length and part time, evening classes are 15-weeks in length. (Some classes can be longer depending upon the clinical sites available.) Evening program clinicals must be performed during daytime hours.

Our certificate program is designed to prepare you to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system
  • Define medical terminology associated with laboratory testing
  • Describe the policies and procedures in maintaining laboratory safety and infection control
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of body systems
  • Describe the legal and ethical implications of patient testing
  • Discuss and demonstrate the proper collection of blood by evacuated tube system and capillary methods
  • Describe the proper methods of requisitioning, specimen transport, and specimen processing
  • Define quality assurance in phlebotomy
  • Take the National Health Career Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician certification examination (included in the cost of tuition and taken at the end of the program.

Although our certificate course is designed to lead you directly into the workforce, you may continue your education, upon completing our program, by applying your hours earned towards one of our associate degree at HACC!

Once you have completed an associate’s degree at HACC, you can further your education by transferring to a four-year school to earn your Bachelor’s degree!

For your convenience, you can complete the entire certificate at our Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Lebanon campuses through on-campus/in-person instruction.
