Captivating portrayal of Mamie Eisenhower planned for luncheon

April 18, 2007
Just in time for Mother's Day, HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College will host a lecture and luncheon featuring a one-woman, costumed portrayal of Mamie Eisenhower. "Mamie in Gettysburg" is scheduled for Saturday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on HACC's Gettysburg Campus at 731 Old Harrisburg Road.

The event features recollections of Mamie Eisenhower's first meeting with Ike, trials and tribulations of marriage, war, politics, the presidency, and their life together in Gettysburg. The face-to-face dramatization portrays her as a symbol of her time and an idea of womanhood that relates well to those over 50, yet her story and humor are enjoyed and understood by all ages.

Ruthmary McIlhenny, who has trained and volunteered as a guide at the Eisenhower National Historic site in Gettysburg for 15 years, will present the monologue. Her anecdotes about Gettysburg's most famous couple include insights from historical research, oral histories, and personal meetings with members of the Eisenhower family. Tauck Tours has called the 35 to 45 minute performance "Stellar!"

McIlhenny, who also is a HACC instructor, has delivered the performance to enthusiastic audiences in the past as part of the College's Adult Living and Learning seminars.

The cost of the performance and the luncheon is $25. To register, call 717-338-1010 or visit www.hacc.edu. HACC's Noncredit Shopping Cart makes it easier than ever to find and register for classes online. Simply find the course, add it to your shopping cart, and then "check out" to enroll in the course.
