Take your photography skill to the next level in "Creative 35mm Photography," as you explore exposure types, lens choices, depth of field, selective focus, flash photography with multiple flashes, creative and practical use of filters, and hand-held meters. This class has been designed for the student who is looking to further invest in his or her hobby or develop a potential career in photography. The class will be held on Thursdays, June 7-28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $65.
In "Digital Photography" students will learn the essential elements of understanding digital photography techniques. Topics will include how to choose and use the various types of digital cameras, image capture, proper exposure, file transfer and manipulations. Enrollment in the course, which is scheduled for Tuesdays, June 12-26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., costs $48.
Mark your calendar now for Thursday, June 7, when "Ins and Outs of Landscaping" will be offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Students will discuss formal versus informal landscaping, which includes plant placement, landscape problem solving, use of decorative objects and structures, along with matching plants to the existing growing conditions. The cost is $20.
If you have always wanted to try Bonsai, then sign up now for "Bonsai for the Beginner." This class will cover the history, styling techniques and care for these intriguing little plants. Each participant will style and pot his or her own Bonsai tree to take along home. The class costs $25, but the instructor will collect an additional $25 materials fee for the plant, Bonsai pot, soil and wire during class. The course will be offered on Thursday, June 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. Students should bring along garden shears or wire cutters to class.
Native plants give four seasons of reliable beauty. They use less water, withstand drought and insects better than most non-natives and generally attract wildlife birds. Learn to recognize and avoid the use of invasive plants that spoil the environment during "Designing with Native Plants." This course will be offered on Thursday, June 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20.
Composting is the practice of converting kitchen and yard waste into material that is beneficial to plants and soil. Composting also reduces the load at municipal waste facilities. To learn the how's and why's of composting, sign up for the "Art of Composting," which is scheduled for Thursday, June 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20.
In "Herbs: Growing and Using" you will learn important things to know about herbs. Selecting, growing, making beverages, oils, salad dressings, and decorative uses can be beneficial. However, the instructor will not cover medicinal uses of herbs. The course will be offered on Monday, June 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20, and an additional $15 supply fee will be collected in class.
Before you buy any pesticide product at your local lawn and garden store, you should carefully research and select the right one based on how you intend to use it. During "Pesticides," students will learn the environmental aspects of organic and inorganic pesticides, as well as establish a basis for proper minimal use. The course will be offered on Thursday, June 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20.
Once again the Lancaster Campus offers "HACC Kids' College: Summer Enrichment Program" for children, grades 3-5. This year sessions are held Monday, June 18 through Thursday, June 21 from 8am-12pm and Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 26.
The June session introduces kids to the college-level learning environment and allows them to choose courses based on their interests. Available courses include Arts (Graphic Design, Playful Puppets, Cartoons to Comic Strips), General Interest (CAD, My Game, Present It), Math (Money Matters, Groovy Geometry, Solving Sudoku), and Science (Chemistry Connections, Energy Force and Motion, Genealogy: Climbing My Family Tree). Cost is $75 for the week.
"Kids' College: Making Movies" teaches the basics of screenwriting, story-boarding, acting, directing, production design, and film editing techniques. Participants, grades 3-8, are encouraged to bring a digital video camera along with accessories (a Hi-8 VHS, or camera can also be used) on Monday, July 23 through Thursday, July 26. The sessions will be held from 8am-3:30pm. Cost is $195.
