If you work with a nonprofit agency and are interested in learning how to obtain grants, "Writing and Funding Grants" will give you practical tips on how to locate grant sources, write grants and increase your funding chances. The two-day course will be offered Tuesday and Wednesday, March 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $175.
Learning practical strategies for fundraising is the focus of "Community Fundraising." The full-day course will discuss effective techniques for planning fundraising projects and tips for special events and membership and capital campaigns. The course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21 and costs $75.
History
Little has been mentioned of the role African Americans played in Gettysburg's history. "Black Voices of Gettysburg" will look at the significant contributions of Clem Johnson; Lydia Hamilton Smith; the role of several African Americans during the battle; Frederick Douglass' 1869 Gettysburg visit; and other African Americans who lived in and around Gettysburg. The course is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and costs $29.
"Adams County's Hidden Treasures" will reveal the many fascinating, beautiful, scenic and interesting places beyond the Gettysburg battlefield. Some highlights include the Adams County Fruit Belt, Michaux State Forest, Appalachian Trail, the statue of Mary Jamison, old stone and wooden bridges, early churches and other landmarks. The course will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, and costs $25.
Arts/Crafts/Music
The total beginner will quickly learn all the basic reading skills needed for playing and reading music for any instrument during "Music Reading: Total Beginners." The course is essential for anyone wishing to take the Instant Piano workshop. Offered at HACC Gettysburg on March 14 from 2 to 4 p.m., the cost for the course is $35.
"Instant Piano for Busy People" is a beginning class in chord piano techniques. Students will learn secrets of the trade to make piano playing a part of life, learning chords, not notes. Learn all the chords needed to play any pop song, any style, any key. The course is scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and costs $49.
If you have the desire and time, you can learn to play the piano for personal enjoyment without having any piano experience. "Piano: Adults, Part 1" will teach you note reading, rhythms, key signatures, and more. The course will be taught in Hanover at the E.H. Markle Intermediate School on Wednesdays, March 7 through April 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The cost is $85.
Beginning and intermediate painters can explore a variety of watercolor techniques in "Watercolors: Painting Flowers." Students will paint four 8 x 10s and one larger painting. The class will be held on Wednesdays, March 21 through April 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $95.
"Primitive Folk Art Painting" is a one-day beginner class that teaches how to paint scenes on a decorative tin plate. Participants will use their drawing skills or a pre-drawn picture to create a plate worth keeping or giving as a gift. The course is scheduled for March 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $49.
Home and Garden
HACC's "Basic Botany" class provides in-depth coverage of angiosperm plant anatomy (leaf, stem and root), growth, flowers, fruit and seeds. The course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 13-29, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $100.
Students will learn simple plumbing and basic electrical repairs in "Home Repairs for Ms. Fix-It." Additional topics covered during class include odd jobs, such as plaster repairs, installing security devices, dry wall repairs, finding wall studs and what tools to have in your basic tool kit. Scheduled for Mondays, March 19 through April 30, 7 to 9 p.m., the course will be held in Hanover at Emory Markle Intermediate School, 225 Bowman Road, Hanover. The cost is $75.
General Interest
"Wellness Works" offers simple stress relief techniques that everyone can use. Students will learn basic massage, strokes for hands, feet, neck and back; breathing techniques; and synergistic movement. The class will be held on Tuesdays, March 13 through April 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $75.
