Black Voices of Gettysburg discusses the contributions of African Americans in the Civil War. Topics covered include Francis Scott Key's emancipation of his slave, Clem Johnson; Lydia Hamilton Smith; the kidnapping of former Virginia slave, Kitty Payne; the role of several African Americans during the battle; Frederick Douglass's 1869 Gettysburg visit; veterans and citizens buried in Lincoln cemetery; and other African Americans who lived in and around Gettysburg. The session will be offered on Monday, June 4 from 6:30-9pm. Cost is $29.
Adams County's Hidden Treasures uncovers the beautiful scenery surrounding the historic Gettysburg Battlefield. Some highlights include: The Adams County Fruit Belt, Michaux State Forest, Appalachian Trail, the statue of Mary Jameson, old stone and wooden bridges, early churches, and other landmarks that you may not be aware of. The class will be held on Monday, June 18 from 7-9pm. Cost is $25.
"Whirlwind of Death": The Iron Brigade and Defense of Herbst's Woods follows the footsteps of this hard-fighting brigade and explore the scene of its most famous and costly battle. The tour covers the arrival of the Iron Brigade on Seminary Ridge, its advance to McPherson's Ridge, and the horrific fighting that occurred in Herbst Woods-some of the bloodiest acreage in American history. The visit will be offered on Wednesday, June 6 from 6-9pm. Cost is $30.
Few battles in the Civil War had as intense a fight as the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. It ranks as one of the bloodiest actions, and it occurred in a relatively brief period of time and in a small area of woods and fields. Cauldron in the Wheatfield gives an overview of the fight and relates the action to the larger battle on July 2. Held on Wednesday, June 13 from 6-9pm, participants will walk about a mile and trace the action from both sides. Cost is $30.
The Fifth Massachusetts Battery at Gettysburg explores the path of one artillery unit at Gettysburg and their role in the preservation of our nation on July 2 and 3, 1863. This tour will be held on Wednesday, June 20 from 6-9pm. Cost is $30. Participants will walk about 1.5 miles.
Bogus Bucktails: Stone's Brigade at Gettysburg focuses on the Union troops of Colonel Roy Stone and their actions on July 1, 1863. The class examines the recruitment of the regiments, their experiences prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, and finally their role at Gettysburg. The tour will be offered on Wednesday, June 27 from 6-9pm. Cost is $30.
Those interested in geology will not want to miss How Did Geology Play a Role in the Battle of Gettysburg? Learn how the land of the Gettysburg area and southeastern Pennsylvania played a role in this famous battle. The class will be offered in Thursday, June 28 from 7-9pm. Cost is $25.
