HACC event to help high school students explore careers in engineering

Feb. 16, 2007
HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, will hold a free half-day program for high school students interested in learning more about what career options exist in the field of engineering. Engineering Career Day will be held on Thursday, February 22, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the C. Ted Lick Wildwood Conference Center on HACC's Harrisburg Campus.

"We have mailed out invitations to nearly 100 high schools throughout the area and expect up to 150 students to attend this annual event," said Dave McNeilly, senior professor, engineering in HACC's business, hospitality, engineering, and technologies division (BHET). "Our purpose is to provide career information to students and help them make the right course selections in high school and beyond."

Sponsored by the BHET division, the event gives students the opportunity to talk with professional engineers, many of whom are members of the Harrisburg Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE).

Participants also will choose from a variety of informative lectures that they can attend to learn more about architectural, computer, civil, electronic, mechanical, and environmental engineering. The engineers will discuss employment opportunities in their field and in related technological areas, as well as present information concerning the educational and vocational training requirements for the occupations that they represent.

HACC professors will offer lectures on nanofabrication and geospatial technologies.

Following the lectures, students will have the opportunity to meet with HACC program coordinators regarding the various technology programs offered at the college.

Because there is limited space available in each of the informational sessions, early registration is suggested. For more information or to register, call 717-780-2558 or email Professor David McNeilly at dwmcneil@hacc.edu.
