HACC Gettysburg greets spring with noncredit offerings

A gamut of interesting topics - outside or in -and the opportunity of learning something new are waiting this May at the Community Education Center of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. The noncredit courses, which cover everything from astronomy to Tosca to stories of the Underground Railroad, are held at the college's Gettysburg Campus, located at 731 Old Harrisburg Road.

 

It only takes three chords and you know the villain is approaching. Hollywood perfected the technique, but Puccini introduced it at the January 1900 premiere of "Tosca" with Scarpia's Theme. Join HACC Gettysburg for a class and trip to the Baltimore Opera at the Lyric for an opera whose characters are capable of great love and even greater cruelty. The course is scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, from 7-9 p.m. The trip to the opera is Friday, May 11, from 6 p.m. to midnight. The cost for both is $99.

It's time to bring peace back to your body, mind and spirit with HACC's "Stress Education Clinic." Learn how to restore balance and a sense of well being through stress reduction techniques. Instruction will include breathwork, guided mindful meditation, interactive exercises, authentic touch, and journaling assignments. The class is held on Tuesdays, 7-8:30 p.m., May 1-22. The cost is $59.

Learn simple, basic massage techniques that you can use to relieve stress and relax in "Massage for Stress Management." The instructor will address hands, feet, neck and shoulders. Students will experience immediate relief, more restful sleep, and feel more energy. The course is scheduled for Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., from May 16-30. The cost is $59.

Meet "Famous Artists with Connections to Adams County." Among those with local links are "the handsomest man in the world," a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, novelists, stars of the silver screen and artists who studied with the Impressionists. This one session class will be held on Monday, May 7, from 7-9 p.m. The cost is $25.

Decades before the Civil War began abolitionists were active north of Gettysburg in the area known as Quaker Valley and Yellow Hill. Located just north of the Mason-Dixon line, this area was a safe haven for Gettysburg's black community during the Confederate invasion. Members of the Religious Society of Friends worked with local freedmen Edward Mathews and Basil Biggs to bring slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Join HACC for this one-session course, "Stories of the Underground Railroad in Adams County," on Monday, May 14, from 7-9 p.m. The cost is $25.

Speak, as well as, write with confidence when you complete "Polishing Your Ps & Qs." Grammar is a powerful tool that can make or break presentation skills. In this course, students will learn basic grammar, such as punctuation, diagramming sentences and subject/verb agreement. Scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 15-29, this course costs $60.

Beginners and hobbyists will learn to observe various astronomical objects in "Basics in Astronomical Observing." The first night-Wednesday, May 16, 7-9 p.m.-will be a classroom experience examining star charts and learning different terms that will help in locating objects and how telescopes work. The second night-Wednesday, May 23, 8-10 p.m.-will take place at a dark-sky site in the Hanover area to view celestial objects and learn how to use the nighttime sky for your enjoyment. The cost is $39.

Students will learn simple plumbing and basic electrical repairs in "Home Repairs for Ms. Fix-It." Additional topics covered during class include odd jobs, such as plaster repairs, installing security devices, dry wall repairs, finding wall studs and what tools to have in your basic tool kit. This course is scheduled for Wednesdays, starting May 30 at 7 to 9 p.m., and continues for four weeks in June from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. The course fee is $75.

"Perennials" is an intensive course covering the identification and use of perennials in landscapes and gardens. The instructor will discuss cultivation and care of a wide variety of perennials, as well as, site selection, preparation, planting techniques and general maintenance. The course runs Tuesdays, May 22 through June 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $125.

Despite the trend toward digital photography, there are an increasing number of photographers using traditional film and large format cameras. Learn the benefits of a large film size and the movements that usually are not found in smaller film or digital cameras in "Introduction to Large Format Photography." This one-session course is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $39.
