HACC leads tour to world famous slate deposit

July 2, 2007
HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, will lead a trip to southeastern York County where, in the 19th century, the world's best slate was mined. Offered through HACC's York Center, the noncredit continuing education course is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, August 4.

"The Delta Story-The World's Best Building Slate" will feature a one-day visit to the town of Delta, where the heritage associated with this famous slate deposit has been preserved. Instructor Jeri L. Jones will focus on how the Welsh migration improved the mining technology.

Also included in the trip are stops at the Old Line Museum, which features the world-famous slate clock, the Slateville Presbyterian Church cemetery, the Jones Quarry, Coulstontown, a community built by the Welsh, and a slate-splitting demonstration.

The cost to register for the course is $59 and includes a guide book. All participants must bring their own lunch and beverage. Cameras are welcome. The bus will leave promptly at 9 a.m. from HACC's York Center at 2010 Pennsylvania Avenue.
