HACC study abroad tour to offer first-hand look at Chinese culture

March 9, 2007
College students and members of the community can experience Chinese culture firsthand while visiting the Great Wall of China, Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City and more during HACC's 2007 Summer Study Tour in China. Central Pennsylvania's Community College offers the excursion through China's most memorable historical sites and museums from June 14-28, 2007.

Xiaoqing Zhu, associate professor of Humanities and Art History, has traveled extensively in China and will teach "Chinese Culture and the Arts in China," which offers an itinerary of relevant visits, lectures, tours and other cultural experiences. Participants taking the study tour for credit will meet the course requirements by attending pre-trip and onsite lectures and completing a required reading list, trip journal and three papers on different aspects of Chinese culture and the arts. Others may enroll on a noncredit basis, without the credit requirements.

"We won't waste a minute during the tour while we gain an overall appreciation for Chinese history and art," said Xiaoqing Zhu, who is completing her doctoral degree in art history with a focus on Chinese and Japanese arts. "The experience will be enhanced by the local bilingual tour guides who will join us once we arrive in China."

The six-city tour will stop in Beijing, Louyang, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and the Zhangjiajie Mountain Region. In addition to visiting well-known and less-known sites in each city, participants will experience first-hand the urban life of Beijing people living in a traditional neighborhood. The group will visit a Chinese home in the neighborhood of Hutong, observe the unique residential architectural design and chat with the host and hostess to learn about the life of a Chinese family.

The cost of HACC's Summer Study Tour in China is $2,975, plus tuition and fees, for a student seeking course credit. Anyone taking a non-credit course will pay an additional $200 noncredit fee. Fees are subject to change due to currency fluctuations and current costs, or if the tour is being taken for college credits. Payment is due May 1.

The cost includes airport transportation, airfare, land transportation, hotel accommodations, and all but one meal. Also included are all instruction, course work, lectures and course-related trips and tours.
