HACC Workshops Help Adults Return to the Classroom

Nov. 12, 2007
With adults returning to the classroom in greater numbers, HACC is lending a hand by introducing a series of new workshops specifically for adult students. HACC's Harrisburg Campus offers a free, two-hour workshop each month for adults contemplating this life-changing decision.

"New Beginnings" is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, and again on Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Room 204 of the Cooper Student Center on HACC's Harrisburg Campus, One HACC Drive.

"Many adults are nervous about returning to the classroom," said Sandra Daniels, a recruiter in HACC's Adult and GED Admissions Office. "In this session, they can come in and learn about everything they have to do to at one time."

The session includes:

  • An orientation to college services
  • Understanding the admissions and enrollment process
  • Tips on time management and becoming a successful student
  • Financial aid information

The classroom has gone through many changes since most adults were in the classroom, and the thought of navigating online applications and Internet courses can be very daunting for some, according to Daniels.

"The workshop is very informal," she said. "We work with adult students and help them understand the things they need to do and when they need to have them done."

Although the reasons for continuing education are just as varied as the adult students themselves, they do have one thing in common: "Adult students tend to be the best students on campus," Daniels said. "They come to the classroom ready to learn because they are focused on what they want, and they go after it."

Registration is required. Contact Daniels at 780-2574 or via e-mail at the address below. For more information, go to www.hacc.edu.
