Little has been mentioned of the role African Americans played in Gettysburg's history. "Black Voices of Gettysburg" will look at the significant contributions of Clem Johnson; Lydia Hamilton Smith; the role of several African Americans during the battle; Frederick Douglass' 1869 Gettysburg visit; and other African Americans who lived in and around Gettysburg. The course is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and costs $29.
Col. David Lang's brigade was the smallest in the Army of Northern Virginia, and the story of their actions at Gettysburg is often eclipsed by that of better-known units. "Florida Brigade at Gettysburg" will introduce the hard-fighting Floridians who sustained appalling losses on July 2 and 3 and examine their actions at the battle. This tour, which will be offered on Sunday, April 15 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., involves substantial walking over occasionally uneven ground. The cost is $30.
Learn the principles of design, site evaluation, and the elements to include in plant preparation in "Basic Garden Design I." This introductory course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 3 - 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $100.
Hands-on experience is what "Container Gardening" is all about. This creative and fun class will help you discover new plants and revisit old favorites to create fabulous containers. The cost to register for this course, which is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 24 through May 3, 6 to 8 p.m., is $70.
Sign up for "Beginner's Guide to Wine" and learn the history of imported and domestic wines, the winemaking process, and the primary grape varieties. Students also will discover the art of wine tasting, become familiar with the tools of the trade and gain an understanding of the basic guidelines for selecting the appropriate wine with food. Learn how to pay off all of your debt, including mortgage, in seven to nine years on your present income in "Debt-Free Living." Bring a calculator and a list of your debts to class. You will learn simple math that works every time. The class will be offered on Thursday, April 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $49.
If you need a refresher course on the fundamentals of golf, register for "Intermediate Group Golf Lessons." The instructor will cover full swing irons and woods, putting, chipping, pitching, sand shots, rules and golf etiquette. Clubs and balls will be provided to students who have none. Class will be held at The Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown on Thursdays, April 24 to May 22, from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. The cost is $85.
