Exhibit on display Jan. 12-Feb. 4 in HACC's Rose Lehrman Art Gallery
Dec. 18, 2008
Harrisburg, PA – Lancaster Clay Studio Artist-in-Residence Shalya Marsh’s visually alluring and intellectually engaging ceramic forms will be on display Jan. 12-Feb. 4 at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Many of Marsh’s abstract sculptures layered with coded messages have the feel of ancient relics arranged formally for the viewer to inspect.
A reception for the artist will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the gallery. The public is invited to the reception as well as the exhibit.
Marsh’s work is influenced by ancient tokens, some of the earliest forms of writing and accounting. She is interested in the idea of interpretation and how interpretation can change the meaning of language or sound. Marsh has long been fascinated by “the inability of the human species to communicate in an effective way”. Some of her sculptures are actually rattles. Her color palette is subdued and earthy. The ceramic sculptures play off each other and force relationships between form, color and texture.
Marsh, who teaches ceramics at several locations, is a member of the National Council for Education of Ceramic Arts. She shows her work throughout the region, and counts among her awards first place in The State Museum of Pennsylvania’s Art of the State 2006.
She has a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She has studied at Penland (N.C.) School of Crafts and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Marsh is artist -in-residence and studio manager at both Lancaster Clay Studio and The Space.
