HARRISBURG – The picturesque landscape of upstate New York is reflected in the watercolors and drawings of Philip Bonarth, whose works will be on display Sept. 23-Oct. 17 in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public during gallery hours.
“Landscape … is thought of as a broad theme of exploration rather than simply various subject matter,” says Bonarth, who retired in 1999 from Rochester Institute of Technology after a 30-year career there.
“(Landscape) is a tangible world, which may be modified by the media and techniques of the artist but cannot be entirely invented,” he says.
The warm and cool contrasts in Bonarth’s expressive watercolors and drawings are reminiscent of the American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), who not only was a successful portrait painter but also a gifted landscape painter.
Bonarth’s work is in numerous collections throughout New York State, including the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, and the Xerox Corp., Rochester. He is represented by the Oxford Gallery in Rochester. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago.
All gallery events are free and open to the public. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. For more information call 780-2435 or e-mail Kim Banister, gallery curator, at kebanist@hacc.edu.
