State lawmakers from Lancaster County featured at Nov. 19 session

LANCASTER – State Reps. Michael Sturla, D-96, and Scott Boyd, R-43, will address “Critical issues facing Pennsylvania” in the first session of a speaker series at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The two lawmakers represent Lancaster County in the state House.
The public is invited to join HACC students, staff and faculty for the free event, which will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Room 203 of the East Building on the campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike. Mike Worman, adjunct instructor at the campus, will moderate.
“We are proud to offer this speaker series as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration at the Lancaster Campus,” said Stuart Savin, Ed.D., campus vice president. “Part of our mission at HACC is to be an integral part of the community, and we are proud to offer this speaker series to engage and inform the Lancaster Community.”
The two lawmakers, both natives of Lancaster County, will answer pre-submitted questions. Each will be asked to respond to the moderator’s wrap up question: “What is your advice to those in attendance regarding the best way(s) for getting involved in ‘citizen politics?’”
Sturla and Boyd also will be available for informal discussion during the last half hour of the event.
“I am excited to have been asked to participate in HACC-Lancaster's speaker series. Public engagement is the key to an efficient and effective government and I applaud HACC at creating this opportunity for public outreach,” said Sturla, a Democrat, who has been a member of the state House since 1991. He currently is majority policy chairman and a member of the Rules committee. A 1974 graduate of Garden Spot High School, Sturla has a bachelor’s degree in environmental design from the University of Kansas.
“I am looking forward to engaging in a lively dialogue with my colleague from Lancaster,” said Boyd, a conservative Republican. “There are critical issues facing our Commonwealth and the best answers are often found within diverse opinions. I am looking forward to the discussions and applaud HACC for facilitating the event.” Rep Boyd has been a member of the House since 2003. He currently serves on the Insurance, Labor Relations, and Tourism & Recreational Development committees. A 1976 graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, he has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Millersville University.
