HACC's Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies partners with Venture Training
May 20, 2009
Harrisburg, PA – Jobless workers who dream of turning their hobbies or skills into a business can get the help from HACC and Venture Training Inc. to make this goal a reality.
HACC’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Harrisburg-based Venture Training have partnered to offer the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s self-employment assistance (SEA) program to eligible CareerLink candidates.
The free SEA program offers classroom-style and Web-based courses to give new entrepreneurs the knowledge they need to become successful in their new undertakings. SEA allows enrollees to continue receiving unemployment benefits while investigating whether to start a business.
To participate in SEA, candidates must:
-
Be receiving unemployment compensation
-
Be registered with CareerLink
-
Meet criteria established by the state Department of Labor and Industry
-
Pass review by Venture Training counselors who evaluate the nature of the business proposal
-
Demonstrate a true entrepreneurial spirit and anticipate actually opening a business upon graduation from the class
Program topics include:
-
Basic business principles and legal requirements for operating a business in Pennsylvania
-
Training to assist in the development of business mission and the business plan
-
Assistance with legal issues, bookkeeping, tax preparation, and marketing
-
Combating risk factors in order to increase the chances of succeeding in the new business venture
Successful completion of the SEA program requires the achievement of specific benchmarks relative to starting a new business and does not guarantee the participant will start and operate a successful business.
Since 1988, Venture Training has enrolled 593 students, with 520 students completing classroom training. Of this number, 72 percent started their own business.
Classes will begin the week of June 15. The classes are three hours in length and will run three nights a week for eight weeks.
For more information about the SEA program, contact Michael Vovakes at (717) 233-9088, or your local CareerLink intake counselor.
