Classes prepare non-native English speakers for high school equivalency test
Feb. 13, 2009
YORK – HACC’s York Campus and The School District of the City of York have teamed up to offer free GED prep classes in Spanish.
Free classes will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, starting March 21, at William Penn Senior High School. (Participants should enter at South Pershing and West College Avenue.) Free childcare is available.
Getting ahead in today’s economy is tough, especially for anyone without a high school diploma. For those whose native language isn’t English, the hurdles to obtaining an American high school diploma can seem overwhelming. A GED diploma (equivalent to a high school diploma) is a step toward finding a better job or entering higher education. The GED prep classes in Spanish cover all aspects of the GED test, including math, reading and writing.
“We’re partnering with The School District of the City of York in response to the overwhelming interest we’ve had for our current Spanish GED prep class offerings at the campus,” said Barbara Seasholtz, ESL education specialist at the York Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. “Or first class has been a hug success, with 25 people currently enrolled. The classes at William Penn High will be more conveniently located for those who live in the city and may have childcare issues.”
Enrollment has started, so call now to register. Free childcare is available.
