Generous support by community donors leads to successful 14-month campaign
March 2, 2009
Harrisburg, PA – A campaign to raise $3.5 million to benefit HACC’s Midtown site has surpassed the targeted goal, thanks to the generous support of community donors that included approximately 150 businesses, alumni, individuals and foundations.
“We are honored during this time of economic challenges that our community responded strongly,” says Edna V. Baehre, Ph.D., president of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
“HACC must continue to play an active role in assisting regional business and industry partners recruit and retain the highly skilled workforce required to compete in increasingly competitive and global markets,” Baehre says.
The successful Midtown Major Gifts Campaign is a major step toward that goal, says Baehre, adding, “I would like to thank all donors, on behalf of HACC, for their generosity.”
The “Share the Vision…Shape the Future” gift campaign supports access and opportunity scholarships, technology and equipment enhancement, and workforce advancement needs of the region.
Joe Beck of Sovereign Bank and James Grandon of Grandon Real Estate Inc., campaign co-chairmen, led a group of volunteers who played a key role in the campaign by meeting with community leaders to share knowledge of the impact of Midtown in the city and region. HACC’s spirit of innovation and forward-thinking vision led to the development of Midtown to serve the community in Harrisburg’s midtown section. The site includes the former Community Center for Technology and the Arts (CCTA) at Fourth and Reily streets that opened in 2001 and the renovated former Evangelical Press Building at Third and Reily streets that opened in August 2007. More than 1,000 students are enrolled in certificate, diploma and associate degree programs in technology and trades careers at Midtown. Auxiliary programs and support services are provided in this integrated, self-contained site with the two buildings connected by a block-long “urban meadow.”
Midtown links HACC’s programs with other urban organizations, including the Harrisburg School District, and community institutions to enhance the learning experiences of HACC students and other participants.
HACC serves the third largest economic and industrial base in Pennsylvania, and is at the forefront of political and social change characteristic of a capital city. HACC currently provides workforce training and community education classes to more than 50,000 students. The college is the second largest provider of nurses in Pennsylvania and the state’s primary provider of public safety training. Eighty percent of HACC alumni live and work within 25 miles of their respective campuses, creating a highly skilled workforce in the region.
