Harrisburg, PA — The Live at Rose Lehrman Artist Series will present Rennie Harris/Puremovement (RHPM) at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 and 28, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. A post-show talk back with the dancers is scheduled after the Saturday performance.

The program includes two newer pieces choreographed by founder and artistic director Harris: “Something To Do with Love, Volume 1,” featuring the music of Marvin Gaye mixed by Kenny Dope, and “Breath,” featuring the music of Zapp Mamma and More Fire. Other repertory pieces include “March of the Antmen,” “P-Funk” and “Continuum.”

Harris draws cheering audiences with his brilliant dancers who help him make the popping, spinning, breaking, locking, dueling, high-energy, virtuosic vocabulary of hip-hop into completely viable theatrical art. The troupe’s goal is to provide audiences with a sincere view of the essence and spirit of hip-hop, rather than the commercially exploited stereotypes most often presented by the media.

Harris, a north Philadelphia native, founded RHPM based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation, with the unique ability to express universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious, and economic boundaries.

In a society where hip-hop is often portrayed as a violent, undisciplined counterculture, RHPM deconstructs popular perception of this medium, expanding and challenging the boundaries and definitions of hip-hop in general. As hip-hop continues to be chosen as the modern generation’s medium of expression, RHPM works to honor its history, explore its ideas, and further its contributions to the surrounding community.
