Jan. 8, 2009
LANCASTER – More than a dozen Pennsylvania artists with ties to Lancaster are exhibiting their works “a la carte” at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.
“Shaking Sticks, the Backyard Shivers” will runs through Feb. 19. The public is invited to the opening reception and panel discussion 4:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in room 203 of the East Building on the campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike. The artists exhibiting their work include: Sherry Barnosky-Bowman, Amy Beard, Andrea Biller-Collins, Becky Blosser, Clifford Eberley, Carol Galligan, Amanda Grosh, Harriet Hacker, Christian Herr, Zach Lindenberger, Jennifer McTague, Jeffrey Moser and Ellen Slupe.
“This exhibit is a dynamic group show featuring the works of artists who have a connection to Lancaster,” said show curator Harriet Hacker, artist and art instructor at HACC. “The artists also have another thing in common – a passion for innovation. Each artist investigates the conceptual and visceral world as much as he or she does the real world.
“Works range from non-objective abstractions full of expression and movement, to genealogical illustrations obsessing about past moments, and include photography, drawings and paintings.”
Hacker also is founder and director of Where Exhibitions in Lancaster that serves as an umbrella for artists to work collaboratively to achieve their goals as well as to work independently in their own vein.
Among the artists, Slupe took her inspiration from a December trip to Connecticut; Galligan traveled to China after taking courses in Chinese art history, painting and poetry and brush and ink painting; and Herr’s works are based on stories “passed down and around by oral traditions” about mining, American Indians and Pennsylvania German folklore.
Exhibit hours are noon-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 5-7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call the HACC-Lancaster Campus at 293-5000.
