HACC announces winners in 2010 High School Mathematics Contest
Competition expands to include local high schools at regional campuses

HARRISBURG – The team from Penn Manor High School finished first in the annual mathematics contest at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, with two students earning individual first and second place awards.
Placing second was Hempfield High School. Both teams were at HACC’s Lancaster Campus competing with other high schools at HACC’s Harrisburg and Gettysburg campuses and linked through interactive video. Finishing in third place was the team from Northern High School, competing at HACC-Gettysburg Campus.
Individual awards were given to the top three students with the highest scores. In first and second place were Ben Clark, grade 11, and Grant Elledge, grade 12, both of Penn Manor. Coming in third was Zachary Felix, grade 11, of Northern High School.
The students completed a series of mathematical problems coordinated by HACC’s math faculty. They had to calculate answers working as a team, individually and in relays.
It was the first time HACC held the contest at several campuses. Five more high schools than last year were able to participate.
Students from Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill, Carlisle, Cedar Crest, Central Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, Dauphin County Technical School, Eastern Lebanon County, Ephrata, Gettysburg Area, Greenwood, Hershey, Lewistown Area, Mechanicsburg Area, Shippensburg Area, Susquehanna Township and Susquenita high schools also participated in the contest.
