Harrisburg, PA – HACC’s Transportation and Logistics CDL training program celebrated its first anniversary recently with an open house and friendly driving competition at the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center adjacent to the Harrisburg Campus.
The driving competition between graduates of HACC’s CDL training program and local professional drivers “gave us a change to judge our progress,” said Tim Sanden, CDL program education specialist at HACC.
HACC’s goal is not just to put CDL drivers on the road, but to insure that HACC-trained CDL drivers are among the safest, most professional in the trucking industry when they attain their certification.
The competition was divided into three categories: a pre-trip inspection of a tractor trailer, a written test of various CDL requirements, and a driving course with 18 drivers participating.
In the pre-trip competition, HACC CDL graduates Rick Mowen and Dan Crumbacker of Greencastle placed second in the top five finishers. In the written test, Crumbacker, Mowen and Randy Ramer of Halifax finished in the top three out of five.
The top five overall winners in the three combined categories were:
-
Mark Gallagher of Scranton, first;
-
Kevin Miskiewicz of Pottstown, second;
-
HACC CDL graduate Rich Mowen of Greencastle, third;
-
Jim March of Sunbury, fourth;
-
HACC CDL graduate Dan Crumbacker of Greencastle and Eric Updike of Elmira, N.Y., tied for fifth.
In addition, ABF Freight driver Jeff Keller of York, Eric Shirk of YRC and Rex Warner of FedEx Freight accepted recognition plaques on behalf of their respective companies.
“We would like to thank our community partners, ABF Freight, FedEx Freight, Dice Tires, Sutliff Auto Group, Lesher Mack Sales and Service, YRC Inc., and GE Capitol Solutions-Trailer Fleet Services for their generous donations to the Transportation and Logistics Program,” said Uly Bell, coordinator of HACC’s Transportation & Logistics program.
