April 8, 2010
HARRISBURG – HACC’s annual GlobalFest brings the colors, sounds and food of the many cultures of Central Pennsylvania together for an afternoon of entertainment and activities for children.
The public is invited to the free, family-friendly event from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in the Cooper Student Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Local groups will perform dances from Korea, Germany, China, Egypt, India, Ireland and the Philippines. The musical group Experimental Group Hispanic will play Latin selections at 1 p.m. A fashion show by the Islamic Ummah Club begins at 3:30 p.m.
Exhibitors and vendors complement the festival with Indian, Korean and Latino foods and crafted items including clothing made from recycled saris, African-themed jewelry, photography and paintings, hand made glass items, and more.
Activities for children continue from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and are designed to bring an appreciation for other cultures. Different stations offer play dough, coloring, face painting, masks, musical instruments and beading.
“GlobalFest is a fun way to learn about different cultures, our interconnectedness and the diversity in our communities,” said Michael Sandy, Director – HACC Center for Global Education. “The day is about sharing and appreciating different cultures and the various world perspectives they offer.”
While at GlobalFest, visitors can also catch Theatre for Young People’s (TYP) production of the classic story, “Charlotte’s Web,” at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center theatre. Tickets for “Charlotte’s Web” are $8 and are available at HACC’s Box Office at 231-ROSE (7673) or online at www.hacc.edu/typ.
