HACC hosts GIS Day at Midtown

Public invited to find out how geographic information system (GIS) technology, contributes to their daily lives
Oct. 20, 2010
HARRISBURG – The world of geographic information system (GIS) technology contributes to our daily lives, but few grasp how important this technology is in today’s world.
Find out more about this technology during a free GIS Day celebration co-sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The public is invited to drop in between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at HACC’s Midtown II site, 1500 N. Third St., Harrisburg. Free parking is available off Reily Street between Third and Fourth streets.
Visitors will see GIS applications in action through live demonstrations, workshops and interactive games. Participants will showcase real-world geospatial technology applications, and provide information on geospatial technology literacy in government, schools, communities and organizations.
     Among the exhibits planned:

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Broadband Mapping program aimed at accelerating the delivery of high-speed Internet to communities. This data will be part of a national broadband map to be launched in February.
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ demonstration of the Automatic Vehicle Location program, which provides real-time vehicle location information to the DMVA and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, enhancing their abilities to make critical decisions in response to emergencies.
  • AT&T will demonstrate mapping apps for the iPhone.
GIS Day, a global event, is held annually on the Wednesday of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 14-20). For more information and the program schedule, contact Nicole Ernst at nlernst@hacc.edu or go to www.hacc.edu, search Midtown-GIS Day.
