LANCASTER – Challenge your creativity and spark your brain with a variety of personal enrichment classes offered this fall at the HACC-Lancaster Campus.

Continuing education classes are held at the HACC-Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Road, unless otherwise noted.

The lineup of arts, crafts and music opportunities include:

Clayworks for Beginners, offered 6:30-9 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 9-Oct. 14, at Randolph Art Studio, 1317 Brunnerville Road, Lititz, at a cost of $200. The fee includes a text, use of tools, clay, glazes, two firings and other materials. Students will receive basic, yet comprehensive instruction to transform clay using a potter’s wheel. Various techniques from clay preparation to finish glazing are taught.

PMC Basics, offered 6-9 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 20-27, or 6-9 p.m. Mondays, Oct.25-Nov. 1, at a cost of $65. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a revolutionary new material that is changing the jewelry world. It looks like clay and can be worked, rolled, cut and shaped like clay with simple tools. When fired by a torch or kiln, it turns to pure silver – just like magic. Students learn to make charms, beads, pendants or earrings. In addition, students will have to purchase supplies. An extra firing/tumbling fee will be charged. All fees must be paid the first day of class.

PMC: Silver Ring, offered 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at a cost of $49. Learn correct sizing, how to embellish, add stones and texture to create your own unique silver ring. Tuition includes the use of tools. Students purchase supplies in class and pay an extra firing/ tumbling charge. All fees must be paid the first day of class.

Earrings 101, offered 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at a cost of $35. This new class will show you many ways to create earrings. Kits will be available for approximately $15 from the instructor. Kit costs may vary depending upon the beads, stones, and findings selected by the student.

Photography, Creative 35mm, offered 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 23-Oct. 14, at a cost of $79. Advance your photography skills by learning about exposure, lens choices, depth of field, selective focus, flash photography, creative and practical use of filters, and hand held meters.

Calligraphy, offered 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 29-Oct. 27, at a cost of $125. This class is an introduction to the art of beautiful writing through instruction in the use of the broad edged pen and learning the Italic letters.

Acrylic Painting, Traditional, offered 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 5-Nov. 9, at a cost of $149. This class is for beginners through intermediate painters, who will learn about and experiment with a variety of basic materials and techniques.

Quilting, Intermediate, offered 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 6-Nov. 17, at a cost of $79. Designed for students who have completed Beginning Quilt Making or Quilt Making, Table Runner, this class will allow students to construct a larger project while learning a variety of hand piecing techniques.

“Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People,” offered 6-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at a cost of $55 plus a $25 materials fee for workbook and CD that will be collected in class. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of “every good boy does fine,” you already know enough to enroll in this beginning class in chord piano techniques. 

Fused Art Glass Jewelry, offered 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 14-28, at a cost of $65, which includes the use of tools. Learn to create beautiful art glass jewelry by cutting specialty fusing and dichroic glass pieces, which are then fired in a kiln. Students will purchase glass and wire and pay a nominal firing fee, which must be paid by cash or check on the first day of class.

General interest offerings include:

 History of the Mystery Novel, offered 6:30-8:30 pm. Tuesdays, Sept. 14-Oct. 5, at a cost of $79. From Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes to Robert B. Parker’s Spenser, the public has had a fascination with mystery and crime. Meet the greatest detectives of all time and the men and women who created them in this four-week course.

Invest Like Warren Buffet, offered 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 8-29, or 6-8 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 4-25, at a cost of $79. Learn the basics of stocks and the market in this interactive course. Students will select a stock and follow it through the class, applying techniques to the selected stock. At the end, you will have amassed a basic toolkit on how to view stocks as businesses and not ticker symbols.

Invest in Your Debt, offered 6-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at a cost of $49. Learn how to get completely out of debt, including your mortgage, in as little as three to seven years. Learn specific powerful and proven strategies that work every time. Bring a list of your debts with balances and monthly payments along with a calculator to class.

ABC’s of College Savings, offered 6-7:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 11 and 18, at a cost of $29. Join this new class for a frank and candid discussion of alternatives to meeting the rising cost of tuition. Class also will examine the average cost of tuition, how to calculate estimated needs, and determine how much you need to save.

Retirement Planning Basics, offered 6-7:30 pm. Thursdays, Sept. 23 and 30, at a cost of $29. This introductory class will look at retirement investments, including Roth and traditional IRAs, 401Ks, 403Bs and SEP plans. Students will explore highlights of each, potential tax benefits and limitations, and investment alternatives for each.
