Harrisburg, PA — Legendary folk singer Richie Havens performs for a sold-out audience at the next Live at Rose Lehrman event at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Opening for Havens is blues musician Harry Manx.
With a voice unlike anyone else, Richie Havens’ soulful singing has touched thousands since his debut on the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. A living legend, Havens’ “Freedom/Motherless Child” has become an unofficial American anthem. This year, in a special 40th anniversary tour commemorating the Woodstock Music and Art Fair where he was the opening act, Havens continues his musical mission of promoting brotherhood and freedom, ecological awareness and hope for a better world.
Haven’s unique percussive guitar style has earned him a place in the pantheon of legendary guitarists, and his interpretations of songs by the Beatles and Bob Dylan have been universally acclaimed. In addition to his success as a musician, he was featured in the original 1972 stage presentation of “The Who’s Tommy,” and had the lead role in the 1974 film “Catch My Soul,” based on Shakespeare’s Othello. In 1977, he co-starred with Richard Pryor in “Greased Lightning.” In subsequent years, Havens has become an advocate for environmental responsibility while continuing to produce new albums and tour the world with artists like Peter Gabriel. Billboard said “this acoustic soul giant truly seems to be getting more inspiring and graceful with age.”
Opening for Havens is blues man Harry Manx. Known for his hypnotic brew of East meets west, Manx honed his musical skills in countries from around the globe. In the 80s he became mesmerized with music of India and now plays a signature east-meets-west style of music that’s part blues, part Indian folk melody, with roots in groove and gospel. His live shows have been described as captivating and engaging, as he plays guitar, lap steel, harmonica, banjo and the Indian Mohan Veena.
