April 1-30           Radius Featured Craftsman – Ceramics artist Patricia Marshall of Camp Hill involves herself in a wide variety of art, both as a teacher and as an award-winning artist. After 35 years specializing in mostly whimsical clay sculpture, she now explores all media, an influence from a trip to Africa. Her whimsical ceramic characters continue because, Marshall says, “humor softens the soul, but soul will expand the art.”

April 17               Photographer, author and environmentalist Renée Jacobs will sign her released book, “Slow Burn, A Photodocument of Centralia, Pennsylvania” from 1-3p.m.

“Slow Burn” chronicles Centralia’s demise from an underground coal mine fire that started in 1962. Award-winning photojournalist Jacobs moved into a house in Centralia’s impact zone in 1983 to document in photographs and interviews the end stages of the tiny anthracite coal town’s unsuccessful fight to resolve the intractable problems that began with the mine fire and culminated in the razing of the town by the federal government. Her book captures and depicts a singular epic event in Pennsylvania history, representing the confluence of environmental, scientific, bureaucratic, and emotional tragedies. The book received critical acclaim in The New York Times Review of Books.
Jacob’s is a former Philadelphia resident, attended Penn State and now lives in Los Angeles. Her work has appeared in Photoicon, Fine Art Photo, The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Cleveland Plain-Dealer, U.S. News and World Report, Boston Phoenix, Camera 35, Camera Arts and SLR Photography. Her work has also been awarded a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and is in the permanent collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

 

April 30               Radius Showcase Series - Pysanky: Ukranian Egg Decorating The second year for this showcase, Pennsylvania artisans offer the colored eggs decorated in the Batik resist method.

April 22               Radius, HACC Gallery and Museum Shop – Deadline to submit items for the May-June Showcase – Under the Cover: Handmade Books. Radius is now accepting entries the upcoming showcase that runs May 1 through June 30.

                                    There is no entry fee and must be a Pennsylvania resident. E-mail up to four images to Jessica Watson, curator of arts and assistant manager, at jlwatson@hacc.edu. Work entered must be for sale under Radius consignment terms. Delivery and pick up is the responsibility of the artist.

 

                                     Hours for Radius are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon-4:30 p.m. Sunday. There is no charge to enter the shop.                                     Radius, on the ground floor of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Third and North streets, is a partnership between HACC and the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission.
