HARRISBURG – Each year members of the art faculty at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College proudly present the best work from their students for the annual spring “Student Honors Show.” The exhibit this year, in two parts, runs from April14-April 23 and April 28-May 7.
The HACC Art Department has about 400 students majoring in one of five different programs: fine arts, art and design, contemporary crafts marketing, photography, or graphic design. Roughly another 400 students that are non-art majors also are enrolled in art classes. Majors and non-majors alike are held to the same professional standards and often produce work of surprising beauty. Students who complete the two-year program at HACC may continue their art studies at professional art schools, such as Tyler School of Art and Maryland Institute College of Art, or at liberal arts schools such as Dickinson College, Millersville University and Messiah College.
Faculty select about 75 works for each exhibit from about 1,000 student entries.
The salon style exhibit in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery demonstrates the breadth and depth of HACC’s art programs as well as the talent and skill of the students. Subject matter is as diverse as the mediums. Works include self portraits, landscapes, social commentary and contemporary issues in oil, charcoal, digital and tradition print, functional and sculptural clay, plaster, glass and jewelry.
The exhibit is supported by the HACC Student Government Association and prizes are awarded during a closing reception for the best work in each category.
