GETTYSBURG – Svitanya, an eight-member Eastern European Women’s Vocal Ensemble, will perform at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, on Tuesday, March 30 in recognition of Women’s History Month. To maximize attendance options, there will be two repeat performances: one from 10-10:45 a.m. and one from 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Both sessions are free and open to the public. A sandwich lunch will be available between performances at no charge, but anyone who would like to have a lunch must RSVP by March 26 to sgavpgb@hacc.edu.
Svitanya – “the light at sunrise” in Ukrainian and Croatian – is a vocal ensemble whose performances express the spirit of village music from across Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. Svitanya offers listeners an opportunity to reconnect to their ancestral roots or to experience new cultures for the first time. The group’s eye-catching costumes include brightly-colored, hand-embroidered blouses from different Eastern European countries, some made by the singers’ own relatives.
From strong and strident field-working songs to dance tunes to lush and emotive arrangements, Svitanya evokes the timbres, rhythms and harmonies of Eastern Europe. The lyrics tell of exuberant daughters and strict mothers, seasons and harvests, girls married too young, love and loss. Songs are performed a cappella, all in the original languages, with occasional accompaniment by traditional instruments.
The Svitanya ensemble is brought to Adams County as artists-in-residence by the Adams County Arts Council, and their appearance at HACC is sponsored by the HACC-Gettysburg Campus Student Government Association.
The HACC campus is located in the North Gettysburg Center at 731 Old Harrisburg Road, near Adams County National Bank and Weis Markets. For more information, call 337-3855.
