HARRISBURG – Skidmore College professor emeritus, Regis Brodie, exhibits his work in several mediums with “A Defining Harmony: Paintings, Sculpture and Vessels” at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery, on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC from Aug. 22-Sept.27.
A reception for the artist is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1.
Recently retired, Brodie taught for 41 years at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., while expressing himself through his art. His work combines skills in painting and sculpture into ceramics.
On his methodology, Brodie said: “Making art is exploratory in nature. It deals with the direct manipulation of materials and processes. My vessel or sculptural forms are elegant and classical. The surface painting, drawing, and textural treatment on the other hand, is out of the Abstract Expressionist and Post Modernist schools. I love the interplay that is created between the refinements of the form and the spontaneously decorated surface. It contrasts the elegant with the organic. I am tight and at the same time loose.”
Brodie received a master’s degree in fine arts in ceramics from Tyler School of Art of Temple University. He also has a master’s degree in painting and a bachelor’s degree in art education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He directed the Summer SIX Art Program at Skidmore for many years. Brodie has received a number of awards including the New York State Art Teachers Special Citation 2005 Award for significant contribution to the field of Art Education in New York State.
He has exhibited his work in many international and national venues such as the 40th Anniversary Benefit Invitational at Harvard University; American Masters-Artists in Santa Fe, N.M.; Soup Tureens At the American Craft Museum in New York City; SOFA New York, 2007; The International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art, N.Y.; and the 3rd International Biennale, World Ceramic Exposition Foundation, in Icheon, Korea.
Brodie’s work can be found internationally in the Escuela de Arte Francisco Alcantara in Madrid; the Museo de Ceramica in Barcelona, Spain; the Musee National de la Ceramique in Sevres, France; Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, England; the Regional Museum of Art in Tula, Russia; and in many college, university and corporate collections.
Brodie has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad. He is affiliated with Loveed Fine Arts in New York City, the James Gallery in Pittsburgh and L’attitude in Boston. He has written articles for magazines such as “Ceramics Monthly” and “The Studio Potter.” His work can be viewed at www.rcbrodie.com.
