HACC announces winners in 2011 High School Mathematics Contest
Competition includes 23 local high schools at regional campuses

HARRISBURG – Northern High School finished first in the annual mathematics contest at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, with one student earning the individual first place award.
The 23 high school teams that competed recently were linked through interactive video at HACC’s Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Lebanon campuses. Northern competed at the Gettysburg Campus.
Placing second was Hempfield High School at the Lancaster Campus. In third place was a tie between Camp Hill High School and Lower Dauphin High School at the Harrisburg Campus.
Individual awards were given to the top three students with the highest scores.
In first place was senior Zachary Felix of Northern High School who placed third in last year’s competition. John Grosh, a sophomore at Hempfield High School, took second place. Coming in third was sophomore Corey Smithmyer of Mechanicsburg High School.
The students completed a series of mathematical problems coordinated by HACC’s math faculty. They had to calculate answers working as a team, individually and in relays.
This year’s contest had the highest number of high schools participating, including: Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill, Carlisle, Cedar Crest, Central Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, Gettysburg Area, Greenwood, Harrisburg Academy, Hempfield, Hershey, Lower Dauphin, Manheim Township, McCaskey East, Mechanicsburg Area, Northern, SciTech, Shippensburg Area, Solanco, Steelton-Highspire, Susquehanna Township, Susquenita and Trinity.
