Nov. 28, 2011
HARRISBURG – “An International Holiday Season” is this year’s theme of the annual winter concert presented by the HACC Wildwood Singers.
The free concert takes place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center theatre on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, One HACC Drive. Parking also is free.
In addition to seasonal solos and duets, the 12-member ensemble conducted by Tina Bakowski, associate professor of music, will perform seasonal selections from around the world.
Featured choral selections include “You that wont to my pipes sound,” a lively Renaissance madrigal by English composer Thomas Morley; “Oy es dia de placer (Today is a day to rejoice and sing), a Spanish dance tune by Tomas Pasqual, a 17th century Mayan composer; “Amuworo ayi otu nwa,” a setting in the Igbo language of the familiar text, “For unto us a child is born,” by Nigerian composer Christian Onyeji; “Al HaNisim (For the Miracles),” a traditional Chanukah folk song arranged by Elliot Z. Levine; and “Northern Lights,” a stunning a cappella work in which shifting tonal patterns reflect the changing hues of the Aurora Borealis witnessed by Norwegian/American composer Ola Gjeilo in his native Norway.
In addition, the singers will perform “Deck the Halls (in 7/8),” a whimsical take on the traditional holiday carol, arranged by James McKelvy; and “Silent Night for All the World,” incorporating German, Spanish, Korean and Zulu as well as the English version of the traditional text, arranged by Pepper Choplin. Featured solos and duets will include: “The Wexford Carol,” “Silver Bells,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “I’ll be Home for Christmas.”
Members of the Wildwood Singers include John Bonanno, Amanda Cap, Katherine Chronister, John (Kith) Cordes, Andrew Fortney, Linda Kohr, Rebecca Mosinski, Kaitlyn Perbetsky, Katherine Roksandic, Nicholas Sardino, Meghan Settino, and Heather Weaver.
