York Campus 5K Run/Walk raises scholarship money

YORK – Runners and walkers can exercise for a good cause at the Second Annual HACC Dash starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 13, at the HACC-York Campus. The 5K Walk/Run will raise money for scholarships available to students at the York Campus with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
“Twenty percent of our students live at or below the poverty line,” said Jill Mitzel, executive assistant to the campus vice president, explaining the importance of making scholarships available. Last year’s event attracted 140 participants and raised more than $4,000.
After the Dash, there will be also be a drawing for a $500 scholarship. All HACC students who register and complete the 5K will be entered for the drawing.
Event organizers hope the event raises awareness of HACC’s presence in the community, Mitzel said. Since opening in 2005, the York Campus has grown to more than 3,000 students, she said.
“We also want to introduce our students to the importance of physical fitness and the rewards of exercising and meeting fitness goals,” she said. The race attracts runners of all ages and speeds. Last year, the first runner finished in 17 minutes and the last participant came in at just over an hour, she said.
The route begins in the parking lot of the York Campus Cytec Building, 2161 Pennsylvania Ave., and continues through the neighboring industrial park and ends back on campus with refreshments and door prizes. The top three male and female finishers will be given special awards and all finishers will receive a medal. In honor of Mother’s Day, all moms participating will receive a free carnation.
Registration and check-in takes place from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on race day. Entry fees are $25 for participants, which includes a limited number of T-shirts available on a first-come, first-serve basis; $10 for runners age 14 and younger.
Community sponsors include The Bon-Ton, York Water Company, Sheetz, and Dentsply Professional.
