Feb. 20, 2013
LANCASTER –– Charles Swisher, a critically acclaimed artist residing in Lancaster, will exhibit his “Head and Figure” work consisting of paintings and drawings through March 28, 2013, at the Art Space in the East Building of the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

A reception for Swisher is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at the Art Space in the East Building of the campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike.

Swisher endeavors to be as objective as possible in his work. He said, “I strive to reconcile the way I observe form in nature with the need to adjust those visual sensations – or to find equivalents for them to satisfy pictorial composition. In my mind, to compose is to simplify!" His portraits and landscapes are not defined precisely, allowing the viewer to finish the picture’s story.

Swisher and his wife, ceramic artist Mariko Swisher, moved to Lancaster in 2006, after life in New York City became more expensive. He continues to frequently exhibit in galleries around New York City and Pennsylvania, as well as throughout the United States and Europe.  Swisher received fellowships in 1998 and 2001 to study in France and Germany respectively.  He also lived in Japan for two years while studying sumi-e painting and literature with painter Tetsuo Ando.

Art Space is open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday – Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday.  For more information, contact Ilene Rosenberg, at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, 717-948-1806 or email irrosenb@hacc.edu.
