Local artist displays acrylics highlighting the human figure LANCASTER – Figurative artist, Ellen Slupe, will exhibit her works in a show entitled “Uncovered,” April 1 – May, 8, 2013, at the Art Space in the East Building of HACC’s Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike.

A reception where the community can meet the artist will be held Tuesday, April 9 from 5-7 p.m. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

To describe “Uncovered,” Slupe said, “This exhibit revisits the figure in various degrees of abstraction… I borrowed poses from Manet, color from the Fauves and Cezanne, and titles from Rodin to create expressive color-filled images created from life models.”

Slupe is a Lancaster-based artist with a background in abstract art. She is known for spontaneous, loose and energized brushstrokes, and for straight-sided shapes which at times appear random or describe the steady rhythms of nature. Rich textures, layered surfaces and unexpected clusters provide her viewers with multiple levels for exploration and contemplation. Slupe has recently returned her focus to the human form, saying, “Historically, a strong background in figure drawing and painting was the foundation for honing artistic skills and it remains so today.”

Slupe’s artwork has been shown in invitational solo and juried group exhibits in many local venues including the Lancaster Museum of Art, the State Museum of Philadelphia and the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg. International venues for her work have included the Art Point Black Gallery in Firenze, Italy, the Gallarie San Vidal in Venice and the Fusion Art Institute in Japan and Seoul, Korea. Her work also is part of many private and national collections both locally and throughout the world.

Slupe earned a bachelor’s degree in pre-med biology from Elizabethtown College, Pa., and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Millersville University, Pa. She writes art reviews for Art Matters Magazine in addition to creating her original artwork.

Slupe serves on the board of the New Arts Program in Kutztown, Pa., and is a past board member for Lancaster County and York Art Associations and past director of the board for Philadelphia Tri-State Artists Equity.
