Exhibit opens April 18
HARRISBURG – Fenêtre Gallery at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will exhibit “Grotesquerie,” paintings by HACC instructor Kristi Arnold, from Friday, April 18 to Wednesday, May 7, 2014. A reception will be held for the artist on Friday, April 18, from 6-8 p.m., during 3rd in the Burg.
The “grotesque” once described an ornamental style of Renaissance painting that embodied not the ugly, but the beautiful. Today’s society associates the grotesque with horrific, repulsive, ugly and distorted objects. This concept is evidenced by deformed rubber Halloween masks, tales of monsters and horrific acts displayed by characters in film and literature.
Arnold’s paintings explore contrasting ideas such as beauty and ugliness, order and disorder and the poetic and horrific, as well as the connection between mythological hybrid beasts, character masks in contemporary films and the tragic comedies of the Commedia dell'arte.
Kristi Arnold is an interdisciplinary artist living in Queens, N.Y. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Belgium, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Bulgaria, Poland and Austria. Arnold has also been the Artist-in-Residence at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium, ARTSPACE in Australia, the University of Georgia in Athens, the Lawrence Art Center in Kansas and a visiting faculty member at The University of Kansas. She currently teaches at HACC.
Fenêtre Gallery is on the second floor of HACC’s Midtown 2 at 1500 Third St. Entrance to the building is on Reily.
