HACC to Offer Online Associate Degree in Gerontology
Starting fall 2015, students can earn a degree in one of the fastest growing careers in healthcare

Gerontology, the study of the aging process from middle age through later life, is among the fastest growing careers in healthcare. Students interested in this field can take advantage of a new fully online associate in arts degree in gerontology offered at HACC starting in the fall 2015 term.

Students who enroll in HACC’s online gerontology program can:
  • Complete an associate degree on your time schedule, which allows you to work and combine study as it fits into your lifestyle
  • Start by enrolling in the associate degree gerontology program or transfer credits you’ve already earned if you previously completed HACC’s gerontology certificate program
  • Get the training and skills needed to enter positions in this high-demand field in the healthcare industry
  • Prepare to transfer into bachelor degree programs at a four-year college or university

The need for an aging services workforce will continue to grow as the population continues to age in Pennsylvania, across the nation and around the world. Gerontology specialists are needed nursing homes, assisted living homes, retirement communities, aging caregiver services and social work agencies.

Professionals in the field of aging work in a variety of settings, according to the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. These include:
  • Community, human services and religious organizations
  • Health care and long-term care institutions
  • Federal, state and local government agencies, including the National Aging Network
  • Schools (working with grandparents who are raising their grandchildren)
  • Retirement communities
  • Academic and other education and research settings
  • Professional organizations
  • Business and industry

Some professionals work directly with older adults. Their activities may include:
  • Developing programs such as health promotion, senior theater groups, intergenerational activities and leisure and recreation for older adults
  • Providing direct care to frail, ill or impaired older adults in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, adult day care or home care programs
  • Counseling older adults and their families about issues of caregiving, employment, death and dying or mental health

A generous contribution from the late Richard J. McLaren recently established the Richard J. McLaren Scholarship Endowment to benefit students at HACC for generations to come.

McLaren, who passed away in March 2007, was single with no children. The HACC Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to raise private contributions in support of HACC, received the life-changing contribution of more than $620,000 from his estate.
