O. Pauline Chow Receives State Mathematics Hall of Fame Award

O. Pauline Chow, HACC senior professor of mathematics and former mathematics and computer science department chair, recently received the Hall of Fame award at the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PCTM). The award is given to a mathematics educator who has shown outstanding talent, dedication and enthusiasm to students in Pennsylvania.

Chow, who joined HACC in 1984, was among the first of HACC’s professors to develop and implement online math podcasts to augment instructional material for her courses and now is among the top 19 leading university instructors at iTunes U.

“When I put my podcast collections and courses at iTunesU, I just want to share my passion of teaching and math knowledge with the public at large. The ultimate joy and reward is to get acknowledgements from random users who watch my podcasts for self-enrichment and want to learn math,” Chow said.

She recently co-authored a development math series for McGraw-Hill and was in charge of all digital content of the series. Chow is active in many math organizations and has served on their boards, including the Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Education, past president of both PCTM and the Pennsylvania State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges and secretary of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. She regularly presents at state and national levels.

Chow received her bachelor's degree in pure mathematics in 1973 and her master's degree in applied mathematics and statistics in 1974. She currently teaches at all levels from intermediate algebra to differential equations.

HACC’s Lancaster Campus Hosts 15th Annual Job Fair

HACC’s Lancaster Campus’ 15th annual job fair takes place March 18-19, 2015, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. each day in the East Building on the campus. The job fair is open to HACC students, alumni and Lancaster area residents as well as the region’s employers.

During the two-day event, job seekers and career changers can meet with industry leaders and find out about jobs and internships while employers can tap into Lancaster County’s labor pool to find just the right employees.

“More employers are able to participate by scheduling a two-day event, and that benefits both attendees and employers,” said Lorie Sonnen, assistant director of career services at the Lancaster Campus. “Our job fair is a great opportunity not only for HACC students, but also for alumni and members of the community. We traditionally have more than 60 employers throughout the two days.”

Many employers offer on-the-spot interviews for full-time or part-time positions, entry level or professional positions and internship and mentoring opportunities in a range of professions. Job seekers are encouraged to dress professionally and bring resumes in order to be prepared for on-the-spot interviews.

“Many company representatives from Lancaster County and also from the entire region will be at the job fair,” said Sonnen.

HACC representatives will provide guidance about workforce development and training programs available at the Lancaster Campus for visitors who want to explore additional professional advancement. Job-related workshops also will be offered.

Spring Job Fair Brings Employers, Opportunities for Job Seekers to HACC
Annual event will be held March 25, 2015, at the Harrisburg Campus

If you are in the job market, looking for a career change or are a student trying to arrange an internship, you may find the right employer at the annual spring job fair at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC.

More than 50 employers from around the region will be at the free fair, which is scheduled March 25, 2015, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Bruce E. Cooper Student Center on the campus, One HACC Drive.

“The job fair is open for current HACC students, alumni and community members to attend. By attending the event, job seekers can meet and network with employers offering a diverse list of job opportunities in Central Pennsylvania. It is a win-win for all who participate and we look forward to hosting all in attendance,” said Ricole Jayman, coordinator, career services, at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.

Job seekers should dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their resume. The fair is an opportunity to meet potential employers and could result in on-the-spot job interviews and possible hiring. Many companies are looking to fill full- and part-time positions in a variety of jobs, including entry level and experienced workers, Jayman said.

Internships also are a key to future success and employers may also be offering these important opportunities, she added. Jayman emphasizes that making connections and networking early can pay off in the future.

San Jose Taiko brings the powerful sounds of contemporary Japanese taiko drumming live on stage. Through their program, “Rhythm Journey,” performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the fluid movement and voice of taiko drums. San Jose Taiko has toured the U.S. and around the world, leading the genre by infusing traditional patterns of taiko with the beat of world rhythms, including African, Brazilian, Latin and jazz. Tickets are $29 or $38 depending on seating location.

Performance sponsors include Lois Lehrman Grass Foundation, HACC Foundation, Richmond Foundation, McCormick Family Foundation, Property Management, Inc. and The Foundation for Enhancing Communities – Rose Lehrman fund. The media sponsor is abc27.

Mike DeMicco on guitar and Chuck Lamb on the piano complete this dynamic quartet. Together they will perform jazz standards, original material and Dave Brubeck classics. A reception in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center Rose Garden will follow the concert for all patrons.

HACC to Display Prints from the Darlene K. Morris Collection at Rose Lehrman Art Gallery
‘Images of Life’ exhibit opens March 2

“Images of Life,” prints from the Darlene K. Morris collection, will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC from March 2 to April 1, 2015.

Included in the exhibit are etchings, lithographs and woodcuts from 19th and 20th century artists from widely different backgrounds. The American Midwest farmer working the fields in Thomas Hart Benton’s work is in sharp contrast to the soft portraits of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s young girls. “Images of Life” brings together these artists and others interested in the world around them – a world comprised of their families, communities and daily activities. Other artists included in the exhibit are Romare Bearden, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, Jacob Lawrence and Henri Matisse.

Darlene Morris earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of New Mexico and her master’s degree at the University of Chicago. She is a passionate collector of a wide range of prints by old and early modern masters. After taking several art history classes at HACC, Morris is sharing her personal collection with the College community.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 5 p.m.-7 p.m. or by appointment. A reception will be held March 5, 2015, from 5:30-7 p.m.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
