Work, Life of Late Avant-Garde Ceramics Artist Featured at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus
Exhibit opens Sept. 14, 2016, at Rose Lehrman Art Gallery
HARRISBURG, Pa. – An exhibit of featuring avant-garde artist Victor Spinski’s ceramics will be on display in the
Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the
Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Sept. 14-Oct. 6, 2016. A reception to honor the artist will be held in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on Sept. 29 from 5:30-7 p.m.
The exhibit honors the life and work of Spinski, a leader of the avant-garde ceramics movement in the 1960s and 1970s, who passed away in 2013. Spinski is known for experimenting with different techniques and materials, such as clay and glaze materials and modeled sculptures after everyday objects such as cups, jars and tea pots.
Spinski’s life was as unique and unusual as his art. He escaped the Nazi occupation of Poland with his parents, spending most of his childhood in refugee camps and military bases. After moving to the U.S. following WWII, he received a bachelor’s degree in Russian literature. He served in the Vietnam War, where he was severely injured. After receiving extensive rehabilitation, Spinski received his degree in ceramics from Indiana University and moved to Delaware, where he taught for 38 years before his retirement in 2006.
The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday and 5-7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment.
HACC received support from John Baker and Sally Van Orden, who helped bring this exhibit to the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery. The Rose Lehrman Art Ggallery also received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth, and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
