Anderson is a New York-based designer, writer and educator. Anderson serves as creative director at Visual Arts Press, the in-house design studio for the School of the Visual Arts in New York City, New York, where she has been teaching design for over 25 years. She is also a partner at Anderson Newton Design (AND). From 2002-10, Anderson served as creative director of design at SpotCo, a New York City advertising agency that creates artwork for Broadway and institutional theater. From 1987-2002, she worked at Rolling Stone Magazine, serving as designer, deputy art director and senior art director.

Anderson’s work has received awards from major design organizations, including the Society of Publication Designers, the Type Directors Club, the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Art Directors Club. In addition, her work has been included in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum and Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives, New York, and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
 
Anderson is author or co-author of numerous books, including “The Typographic Universe” with Steven Heller. She teaches in the School of Visual Arts MFA, undergraduate and high school design programs. She currently serves on the board for the Type Directors Club and is a member of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee for the U.S. Postal Service.

HACC’s Gettysburg Campus Offers Free Activities to EMBRACE Diversity and Inclusion
HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg Campus Diversity Committee of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is hosting a series of free community events this fall 2018 to help us EMBRACE (Educate, Model, Broaden, Respect, Accept, Connect, Empathize) our diversity!
Events scheduled through November include:

• A reading of “Evicted,” a New York Times bestseller and Pulitzer Prize winning novel, and subsequent book discussion groups.
• A series of brown bag sessions on topics such as the documentary, “The Latino List;” “Title IX: How to Cultivate a Campus Free from Gender-Based Discrimination;” “U.S.-Mexico Border Immersion Experience;” and “Exploration of Self-Identity.”
• Campus wide participation in community programs such as the annual Adams County Heritage Festival, Salsa on the Square (with a free introductory salsa dance lesson at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus) and the Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture, “Fighting for the Reunion: Dilemmas of Hatred and Vengeance.”

Community Picnic Kicks Off Year for Harrisburg Promise Students
HARRISBURG, Pa. – On Aug. 18, 2018, approximately 50 middle-school students, their families and community leaders celebrated the beginning of the 2018 Harrisburg Promise program at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center Garden at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Over the next year, these students will receive mentorship and participate in college-readiness activities on campus to build a pathway to a college education.
 
“Everyone deserves access to higher education,” said HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski, Ed.D. “Where you live or how much you make should not determine your college options. You are now in college!”
 
Students, their families and guests also heard from Emily Leader, chairwoman, Board of Commissioners, Harrisburg Housing Authority;  Dave Madsen, member, Harrisburg City Council; and Travis Waters, superintendent of the Steelton-Highspire School District. Students said that they planned to become doctors, teachers and engineers.
 
“This program is giving children the opportunity to see what college life is about,” said Tyra Madden, whose son Bryce is participating in the program.
 
The Harrisburg Promise is a partnership between HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; the City of Harrisburg; and the Harrisburg Housing Authority.
 
The Harrisburg Promise creates a pathway to postsecondary education for youth in Harrisburg, specifically in these areas: Hall Manor, Hillside Village, Hoverter Homes, MW Smith Homes, William Howard Day Homes and neighborhoods within the Steelton-Highspire School District.
 
One student said of the Harrisburg Promise, “I like the Harrisburg Promise because it is an opportunity to further my academic future and create connections with people. Also, it allows us as a whole to bond with each other and become familiar with our soon-to-be surroundings.”
 
In the Harrisburg Promise, participating students will be supported from seventh grade through the end of high school with mentoring and college- and career-preparedness activities. Because we believe finances should never be a barrier to receiving an education, students who have been successful under the Harrisburg Promise will then become eligible to receive the Harrisburg Promise Scholarship from the HACC Foundation to attend HACC. Approximately 70 students are currently participating in the program.
