HARRISBURG, Pa. – HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, celebrated more than 970 students who completed their associate degree, certificate or diploma during the fall 2019 term at its Commencement ceremony on Dec. 17, 2019, at the Giant Center in Hershey.

As part of HACC’s Commencement tradition, the following employees presented diplomas to family members and colleagues who were in the graduating class.

• Pamela Capwell, professor emerita of mathematics, presented to her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Watkins
• Debbie Gardner, adjunct faculty in continuing education, presented to her niece, Danielle Tucci
• Victor Rodgers, associate provost for workforce development and continuing education, presented to his executive assistant, Jamie Eckrode
• Tracey Smith, campus dean of student affairs, presented to her brother, Matthew Shellhammer
• Margaret Sweeney, adjunct faculty of reading, presented to her daughter, Kariann Sweeney
• Bob Dudley, emeritus staff, presented to his daughter, Rachel Dudley

During the ceremony, faculty speaker Mary Richards, M.A., a HACC alumna, challenged graduates to be to be humane in an inhumane world, while being kind to others. She wished them well in their next stage of life and reminded them that “HACC provided you with the tools you need to get a great job and to further your education. But you also received lessons in perspective, compromise, acceptance and compassion.”

Student speaker Kelly Jo Singleton celebrated and encouraged her fellow graduates to remember how far they had come, embrace the challenges when they arrive and be thankful for them. Singleton, 57, told them, “Allow yourself to be stronger than any obstacle, to be more courageous than any fear, to be more determined than any doubt.” Singleton graduated with an associate degree in communication.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The professional artists who comprise the Art Program faculty at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will exhibit their work Jan. 21 to Feb. 13, 2020, in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.

The variety of artwork demonstrates the skill and talent possessed by the HACC faculty. Elegant ceramic works by Emily Hampson are juxtaposed next to Lisa Bennett’s photographs exploring interpersonal connections. Digital prints by Shawn Williams explore working class and migrant issues, and Amy Lefever’s interests in Russian Constructivism, Deconstructivism, and musical structure are exposed through ceramic pieces. The exhibit also features the paintings and drawings of Ruth Bernard, Casey Hall and Monica Smith.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. A reception for the artists will be held Feb. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibits and reception are free and open to the public. 

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
