Officers Option 1
April 7, 2021
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Student scholars at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, brought home four awards from the recent Phi Theta Kappa Middle-States Virtual Regional Conference, March 19-20, 2021.

In addition, Rachel Fleagle, secretary of HACC’s PTK Chapter, Alpha Nu Omega, was named to the region’s Officer Hall of Honor for motivating her fellow officers to reach their Five Star Chapter goals. Fleagle was also recognized as a Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar, earning a $1,500 scholarship. Her selection was based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition, for which more than 2,000 applications were received this year. This program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Among the awards earned by members of Alpha Nu Omega Chapter during the regional conference:

Distinguished Honors Action Project – This student-led research project was about community gardens and how to reimagine them during a pandemic.

Distinguished College Project – Members developed a communication platform for HACC students missing hallway conversations during the pandemic. They:
  • Presented their work to HACC President and CEO John J. “Ski” Sygielski, MBA, Ed.D., a project requirement
  • Collected data from former students
  • Piloted Discord, a virtual instant messaging system, with active PTK members

Five Star Chapter Status – For the second year in a row, the Alpha Nu Omega Chapter earned PTK’s highest chapter award.

Fifth Most Distinguished Chapter – This designation places the Alpha Nu Omega Chapter in the top five of the region’s 82 chapters.

In addition to Fleagle, Alpha Nu Omega officers include HACC students, Harrison Monahan, president; Christie Bathurst, executive vice president; Dawne Sult, vice president of services and student development; and Kristiana West, vice president of programs.
