HACC Celebrates Students During Community College Month

May 25, 2022
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania’s first and largest community college celebrated Community College Month in a big way. With support from the HACC Foundation, HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, awarded $21,000 for students to continue their education at HACC.

From Feb. 15 to March 15, continuing students were encouraged to complete an online tuition giveaway form, which gave them the chance to win free money to apply to their HACC tuition and fees. On each business day in April, a name was randomly drawn to determine a winner. As a result, 21 continuing HACC students were awarded $1,000 to use for their fall 2022 semester.

As part of the submission, students were asked why they chose to attend HACC. Responses included:

  • Catherine chose HACC to get her second degree in web development and design. She said, “I know that HACC is full of people who have empathy in real life and I want to change the world and better it.”
  • Serenity said she chose HACC to “get a quicker start in my career path, and because it is such a cheap option for those who cannot afford to attend a university.”
  • Sheryl chose HACC to give her children a better life. She said, “Before I met my husband I was a single mom of 6 children. I always wanted to go back to school and I dreamed to be a nurse. However when my children was younger they were my main priority. Now that my kids are older my time has come to better myself and pursue my dreams.”
  • Troy chose HACC because “Attending HACC has provided me the opportunity to work and save money, while simultaneously working on my education.”

Linnie S. Carter, Ph.D., APR, the vice president of college advancement at HACC and executive director of the HACC Foundation, said, “There are more than 1,100 community colleges in the United States. All day, every day, we change lives – especially the first, largest and best community college in Pennsylvania. Community College Month is a celebration of our nation’s community colleges and the millions of students we serve. At HACC, we put our students first, and the awarding of $21,000 to these deserving students is one of many examples of this.”
